Do you know the history and origins of Mother's Day? The festivities already existed in ancient times. The Greeks celebrated Rhea, the mother of the gods, and the Romans paid tribute to the mothers of their families (the "matronas") during festivals called "Matronalia" or "Matralia". These days were celebrated in spring, the month of fertility.
In the 16th century, the English celebrated Mothering Sunday, and in the 20th century the Americans Mother's Day.
In France, the first Mother's Day was introduced in Lyon in 1918 to pay tribute to the mothers and wives who lost their sons and husbands in the First World War. It was propagated by American soldiers. Then, on 25 May 1941, Marshal Pétain included this national Mother's Day in the calendar. Mothers' Day was officially introduced after the Second World War by Vincent Auriol, President of the Republic, with the law of 24 May 1950.
