In Catholic countries, fathers have been celebrated since the Middle Ages on 19 March, Saint Joseph's Day, as he was the adoptive father of Jesus.
This date, 19 March, has been kept ever since in some countries with a Catholic tradition, notably Portugal, Spain, Italy and Latin American countries with a Hispanic influence. The first non-religious Father's Day was created at the beginning of the 20th century in the United States. After several attempts, it was the festival instituted on 19 June 1910 by Sonora Smart Dodd that met with some success.
In France, it was the lighter manufacturer Flaminaire who first had the idea, in 1949, of creating a Father's Day for commercial reasons. Its director, Marcel Quercia, to help launch his gas lighter in France, launched Father's Day in 1950, on the third Sunday in June, based on the American model, with the slogan "Our dads have told us, for Father's Day, they all want a Flaminaire"!
