Espadrille Festival in Mauléon

The espadrille: a typical Basque craft product that comes in all colours!

The espadrille is a light and colourful sandal that was made in the Basque Country in the 18th century by hemp and linen craftsmen. In 1880, espadrilles were worn by mining workers and exported to South America.

The day's programme includes

  • the traditional market in fronton square, the Assumption Mass with the Xiberoko Zohordia choir,
  • 5 km run in espadrilles. Soulet songs and dances, game of grand chistera, Basque strength, tasting and sales of local produce.
  • Free entertainment
  • A workshop will be set up under a marquee.

Sandal-makers will be on hand to explain their trade to the public.
