A great celebration to come: Mother's Day!

But where does Mother's Day come from...?

Mothers have been honoured since ancient times. But in a different way: among the Greeks, it was the mother of the gods, Rhea, who was celebrated. The Romans, in the 5th century BC, paid tribute to women and mothers.

It was not until the 19th century that the festival was born in France. In 1806, Napoleon Bonaparte suggested the creation of an official Mother's Day, to be celebrated in the spring. But the idea was slow to take hold.

However, it was the Union Fraternelle des Pères de Famille Méritants d'Artas that was responsible for the very first celebration of mothers. On 10 June 1906, the Isère region decided to reward the most deserving mothers, all in a real festive atmosphere. Later, on 16 June 1918, Colonel de la Croix-Laval established the first official "Mothers' Day" in Lyon. This was the beginning of the tradition.

On 25 May 1941, Marshal Pétain definitively instituted "National Mothers' Day". After the Second World War, on 24 May 1950, the President of the Republic, Vincent Auriol, promulgated a law instituting Mother's Day. It was then definitively set for the last Sunday in May. Although this date coincides with Pentecost, Mother's Day is celebrated on the first Sunday in June.

Of course, we don't need an official date to pay tribute to our mothers, the pillars of our homes, but what a pleasure it is to remember that she is there for us and to devote our full attention to her for a whole day!
